Domestic Sprinklers 2.31

Domestic Sprinklers was formed in 2000 by Colin Taylor the current MD. It was formed as a specialist fire sprinkler company to work in the residential and domestic sprinkler markets. At the time of the formation there were only two other companies in the UK working in the same market and approx. 15 companies working in the commercial market.

The R&D market did not really exist as such in the early days of the company so for the first two years the main activity was to build the market and working with Sir George Pigot from the RSA we pioneered the R&D industry.

During 2003 we won a major contract with Dorset County Council and retro fitted sprinkler systems into all of their Care Homes. This was a first in the industry and led to the company being awarded a contract with BUPA for over 20 care homes.

The domestic market place was building fast and by the end of 2004 we had completed 1500 installations into domestic homes. There were some notable installations during the companies development including 4 projects for Grand Designs, 2 for Sarah Beenys Home Improvement program and 3 winning projects for the Observer Design Awards.

We formed partnerships with Building Control
departments and delivered CPD talks to them in
return for being nominated as approved installers. We also formed official partnerships with 7 Fire Brigades including Hampshire, Dorset and Cornwall.

We supported all of these with running live burn
demos and have to date installed 12 systems to
properties which have had controlled live burns to show the effectiveness of sprinklers. For almost 3 years we worked with Hampshire F&RS doing monthly live burns at their Eastleigh HQ. These demos were attended by MP’s and Key Government personnel all with a view to promoting the use of sprinklers.

In 2008 the commercial industry finally acknowledged that there was a separate R&D
industry and that it was building fast. We were the only remaining original company at this stage and as such Colin Taylor was invited to join BAFSA on their Council. This was a major event in that it gave a voice to the R&D industry and gained support from the wider sprinkler industry in the UK.

The company continued to grow and in 2012 we were appointed by BAFSA and the BRE to carry out the first retro fit High Rise installation in Europe. The project information can be found in the following link:

This proved to the Country that it was not only
possible to install a system without disturbing the residents but it was also cost effective. This led to a large number of similar projects by the company and is now standard practice in the industry. The company continues to grow and has now branched out with 11 regional offices this allows costs to be kept to a standard and also service levels can be ensured.
