The University of East Anglia clinical psychology doctoral course is a partnership between the University, the NHS, and practising clinical psychologists in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. We value the support of practising clinical psychologists highly; and they are involved in all aspects of the course organisation and teaching and have many links with University. We offer supervisor training, study days and a highly valued series of masterclasses in cognitive behavioural therapy.

The course is based within the Department of Clinical Psychology within the inter-disciplinary Norwich Medical School (MED) which is based within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The School provides a unique environment for training clinical psychologists to work in the NHS of the future. There are five Departments within Norwich Medical School: 1) Clinical Psychology, 2) Nutrition, 3) Medicine, 4) Population Health and Primary Care, and 5) Medical Education. Within the School and wider Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences there is an active and enthusiastic programme of research with substantial strengths in psychological sciences and mental health, biomedical sciences, nutrition, clinical sciences, epidemiology and public health, health economics, health services research and rehabilitation and nursing sciences. We have over 140 live research projects. Well over two thirds of our research is recognised to be of international standing; well over a third is judged to be world-leading. Last year we received more than £25m in funding from organisation such as the UK Research Council, The European Commission and the World Health Organisation. We continue to build our portfolio of work. We continue to recruit more experts – 12 more senior clinical academics alone over the next three years.

The Department of Clinical Psychology within Norwich Medical School is based in attractive accommodation on the University campus. We have an active and robust programme of research and are currently running clinical trials investigating the effectiveness of psychological therapies with children who have obsessive compulsive disorder, children and adolescents with depression, and adults with Asperger Syndrome who have difficulties with anxiety. Other clinical trials involve the used of computerised cognitive behavioural therapy, psychological therapies for people with psychosis, and psychological therapies within forensic mental health care. Further research programmes involve people with PTSD, children and adults with brain injury, as well as people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. We also have studies running which are investigating cognitive biases within emotional disorders, and have projects within health and developmental psychology. Our research programmes are funded from a number of sources including the MRC, ESRC, the Wellcome Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, the British Academy, Action Medial Research, NIHR-RfPB, NIHR-TCC, NIHR-RISC, NIHR Programme Grant for Applied Research and the NIHR HTA programme.

We are offering a unique route to Clinical Psychology training at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK that allows international students an opportunity to train as a clinical psychologist with clinical practice experience gained in the UK and as an option, to complete their final year of training internationally. This option is only available if UEA is able to source, quality assure and monitor the International Placements. This doctorate (ClinPsyD) entitles students to apply for registration as a chartered Clinical Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and become accredited with the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

In the first two years international students will join the trainee cohort to complete the ClinPsyD programme of supervised clinical placements, teaching and research in and around Norwich. In the first two years the clinical placements are designed to equip trainees to develop core competences in clinical practice. During years one and two trainees gain experience of working across the life-span, of working in residential and community settings, and with people who have severe and/or enduring problems. The ClinPsyD adheres to a model of teaching-placement synchronization and the teaching programme is organised around the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency and the British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation criteria. In terms of research, students are required to engage in service-based research projects and to produce a research portfolio (up to 40,000 words) comprising a systematic review and empirical paper that make a significant contribution to knowledge.

Upon successful completion of years one and two, international students have the option of continuing their training at UEA and clinical practice placements in the NHS in East Anglia or to complete the final year of the Programme by undertaking specialist clinical placements and completing their research internationally. The UEA ClinPsyD Programme staff will provide oversight of the governance of placements and research supervision during year three of the Programme. If a trainee elects to follow the international option for the final year of training, teaching in year three will be delivered via a variety of modalities, including videoconferencing), recorded video-seminars, and using online methods (the Blackboard virtual learning environment). Some practice elements of the academic curriculum may be delivered locally.

For international students an induction programme will be organized in order that students are introduced to working in the UK healthcare sector and are provided with an introduction to the culture of the NHS in England.
