An historic event became news around the world. Newspapers from London to West Point, NE reported the story as well as Life and Time Magazine: On March 7, 1945, the 9th U.S. Armored Division. led by Lt. Karl H. Timmermann, was able to take the bridge by surprise after two at...tempts by the German defense failed. He was the First Officer to cross the Rhine River at Remagen, Germany.
The capture of the bridge is known in the history of WWII as the" Miracle of the Rhine." General Eisenhower stated: "The bridge is worth its weight in Gold." It was said that the capture of the Remagen Bridge shortened the war by six months and saved countless lives on both sides.
