I began drawing and painting at four years old. I spent the majority of time at my Grandparent's house during pre-school years and then most weekends at their home once I started school. My Grandmother encouraged me to draw. She would always have pencils and crayons, but no paper, so she would send me out to the woodpile to choose a few pieces of smooth wood to draw and paint on. To this day, I love painting on wood best. Music inspires me to paint. Many of my family members either play music or sing, so I grew up with music of some kind pretty much always around me. Music soothes the soul. Art is to put that music, that feeling onto canvas. I can paint almost anything, but my favorite is painting musical instruments or instrumental pieces. I want to help bring more beauty and light to the world. Help others to have more joy in their lives. If it is for me to paint a painting for collectors and clients, for them so see it each day and bring a smile to their face or a little warmth to their heart; that is what makes me happy. Just knowing something I did helped someone else to feel better makes all those long hours with the brush worthwhile. I have used and painted with pen & ink, color pencils, water-color, acrylics, oil color sticks and oil paint. My favorite is oil paint, although I do still today use acrylics for some paintings. As for textured paintings and surface building, I use almost anything available and appropriate for the painting; (mixed media) wood, epoxy, wire, plaster, tile mastic, liquid nails, silicone, metal parts/pieces and other things. I really haven't had any requests for strange subject matter, thank goodness! I have, however, had several requests to paint things which, to me, would be labeled "craft" type painting instead of authentic artwork. There is a difference and I just have to say “no” to those requests. At present (among several paintings I have going), I am also working on some hand castings and a female lower back body casting. It is going to be a very nice work of Art. I am a native of Philadelphia, Mississippi and was born in Meridian and raised in Neshoba County. I am married and I have one daughter and one son. Many people have asked where I came up with SuRad as for my Artwork Signature instead of using my own name. I am like any mother who dearly loves her children. I place them and their needs above my own. I began painting because I love painting! It wasn't until 2011 that I went public with my Artwork due to many friends and family encouraging me to do so. I signed some of my first paintings using my middle name and it just did not "feel right". I prayed about it and asked God to reveal to me what my artwork signature should be. A few days later, I was driving to town and, wow, it came sailing through my mind out of the blue! "Su" (after my daughter Susan) and "Rad" (after my son JaRad) "SuRad.” Should there ever be a legacy, I would rather it be for my two children instead of for me. I also did some research on each of those names placed together and it seemed to be perfect! "Su" meaning; first, foremost, front, ahead, top & etc. "Rad" meaning pretty much what it says; all that, awesome, great & etc. Putting them together, the meaning is almost everything I desire my Artwork to be. Presently I have collectors of my artwork from all around the U.S. and other countries, New Zealand, Germany and Australia. I do not advertise by any means other than face Book and word of mouth. I do not have my artwork in any gallery. I may be contacted via Facebook or you may call my direct line to the studio 601-656-8498. All I need is a good description or photo of what you want painted for an original work of art. Each of my paintings are numbered and signed by SuRad, certificate of authenticity also included. I am my own worst critic, as the old saying goes. No matter how good a painting is, I am never quite 100% satisfied. There is a certain light, depth and energy that I am trying to capture in my artwork, which I hope to fully achieve. (A story for another day- When I was only in my late teens, I had the experience of physically dying, going to hell and coming back to this life. Later in the mid 90's, I lay down to take a nap and something happened to me. I suddenly found myself out of my physical body walking through my house, seeing everything just as it was and then I was pulled through a veil - I have seen and experienced places, colors, light, and the greatest love in Heaven! (and NO, absolutely no drug nor drinks involved!) I desire for all of my paintings to have at least a small touch of the essence of Heaven in them. Not sure if I will ever achieve this, but I am very much trying! Yes, I have begun a book years ago on these experiences, but I was called more-so towards the painting. Maybe one day ahead there will be a book.
