The ÑOOKO BOKK project, which is initiated and implemented by the Winter Term African Literature Class (2015-2016) at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, is designed to help students at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, have better access to books in English. It more specifically benefits the students in the Department of English who strive each year to get photocopies, if they can find any, of the books on their syllabus due to the inadequacy of university library resources and the inexistence in the country of bookshops that retail English-language books.
Considering the impressive number of students (6,000 ) majoring in English in Senegal, a French-speaking country, and the disproportionate amount of academic resources in English language, the initiators of the project have decided to pool together their efforts in order to build a solidarity network between Africa and the United States, by collecting books and raising shipping money on behalf of their brothers and sisters in Senegal. The WMU students working on the ÑOOKO BOKK project intend to show, across geographical, cultural, ethnic, and religious barriers, that all young people in the world entertain the same aspirations for knowledge, self-fulfillment, and the building of a better world for humankind.
-Dr. Abdou Ngom, professor of English at Cheikh Anta Diop University.
