The Checkers Montgomery 4.17

The Checkers, Montgomery, is a Michelin-star restaurant offering comfortable accommodation in five beautiful rooms. Chef proprietor Stéphane Borie hails from Agen, near Bordeaux and - together with his accomplished chef partner Sarah - creates some of the finest dishes in Wales.

Sarah's sister Kathryn - who runs front of house - completes the family business line-up and together they are locally known as 'the Frenchman and the farmers daughters'.

Stéphane and Sarah have impeccable cuisine credentials, which were quickly recognised by the Michelin guide when The Checkers was awarded its first star just seven months after opening in 2011.

After cutting his teeth in the kitchens of Bordeaux, Stéphane moved to London before spending seven years honing his culinary art with Michael Roux, at the three-star Waterside Inn, Bray. Meeting Sarah there - and her sister Kathryn - led to the trio opening the Herbert Arms at Chirbury in 2008.

Renovating a beautiful 17th century former coaching house, they made their business home Montgomery, Powys, in 2011 and the Checkers was born.

Sarah has worked in some of Britain's finest kitchens as well as the Waterside Inn and spent several years cooking for private clients around the UK and Europe.

Kathryn runs front of house where she ensures the service is faultless and the experience is informal, relaxing and fun. As a former nurse, who grew up with her sister on a Shropshire Dairy farm, she loves our diners to feel at home while experiencing their visit as something really special.

The accommodation at the Checkers is characterful and luxurious, with an air of contemporary chic. We think the little touches are important, so our duvets are down-filled, our sheets are Egyptian cotton, toiletries are by L'Occitane and the cookies you can enjoy with your tea or coffee are always home made.
