At Portsmouth British Martial Arts we study Swordsmanship and other weapon forms (Quarterstaff, English Billhook, Sword and Targe, Sword and dagger and others) as practiced in the 17th and 18th Century by Highland and English fencing masters.

We train people of all levels of fitness and ability, the study of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is a great way to meet friends, get fitter and learn a new skill bringing confidence and stress relief.

The practice of HEMA is getting more popular every day around the world, practicing martial skills from a huge range of pre medieval to victorian systems, it's a great time to join the worldwide community and a great way to combine personal physical development, mental stimulation and social activity.

With today's sedentary lifestyle a hobby that can help build muscle tone, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and help reduce stress is invaluable, so please feel free to ask us anything about what we do or if HEMA is for you.

The first lesson is free so you can come check us out when it suits you at no cost.

Our lessons are held on Thursdays upstairs in the Fratton British Legion building (1 - 3 Lucknow Street, PO1 1PT) right next to the Fratton train station, 7:30 to 9:30 with beginner lessons held on the first Thursday of every month (however we can get you started at any session). Press the buzzer to be allowed in but make sure to sign your vehicle in at the bar.
