I love to knit. It is my absolute passion. I love each and every process involved, from winding a beautiful skein of handspun yarn into a ball of wool to work with, all the way through to its final stages, working it across a couple of simple needles and transforming it into a tactile piece of knitwear for someone to love and enjoy, hopefully even more than I did creating it.
When I was a child I learned how to knit at school. I aspired to be a fashion designer back then, and used to carry books around with me with various dresses drawn inside that I had designed. I got into more trouble at school for drawing clothes in my copybooks instead of homework. Now instead of using fabric and a sewing machine to make beautiful clothes to wear, I knit and crochet with wool, cashmere, silk and turn them into a fabric of sorts. I also work with sterling silver to create beautiful crochet and knitted jewellery such as brooches and pins for lace shawls and necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
Banbridge in county Down has a very long history of linen weaving. It comes as no surprise to me that this is where I have eventually settled. My house sits on fields where the linen mills laid out their cloths to dry in the sun and fresh air.
I am exceptionally proud of my town and its wonderful people, and I am delighted to carry on its tradition (even in my small way) of weaving and crafting.
