The English Language Teaching Unit
(ELTU) was established in 1988 to provide
English language preparation support for
the University of Leicester’s international
students. Since then, the ELTU has evolved
into one of the largest departments of its
kind in the UK. Today, as well as continuing
to provide pre-sessional support to over
1,000 students every year, the ELTU’s scope
has expanded to offering a wide range
of services for a variety of organisations,
including Cambridge Certificate in English
Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
teacher training, English for both specific
and general purposes and English language
teaching consultancy. The ELTU is:
• Accredited by the British Council
• An authorised centre for both Cambridge
language examinations and CELTA
courses
• An active member of BALEAP (British
Association of Lecturers in English for
Academic Purposes).
The ELTU also delivers credit bearing
modules for Bachelors and Masters degree
programmes, and offers a distance learning
Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English
for Academic Purposes.
