Details

Acam Music is a friendly, industrious and energetic music school dedicated to making music fun for all its students. When you are a member of Acam you have lots of other musicians all playing their own instruments - this means that you have the opportunity to meet these people and do projects with them like forming a band, experimenting with combining different instruments or singing in harmony. If you have something you’ve always wanted to do we will do our best to make it happen.

Which instrument?
Not sure which instrument to choose?
Come for a Consultation session where we can find the right instrument for you.
If you can't see the instrument that you are looking for please ask as we probably have a suitable teacher!
Examinations
Through ACAM Music it is possible to be entered for examinations from all of the major examining boards such as the Associated Board (ABRSM), Trinity, Trinity Rock and Rock School.
Did you know you can do exams in pop singing? With help from your teacher you can choose your own songs to sing (even ones that have only just come out) and gain qualifications from them.
At the higher grades we can help gain you points for university entrance if you need it. Maybe you’re a teen who loves singing karaoke. With some training from us you could sing 5 of your favourite songs to an examiner you could get as many as 75 UCAS points: That’s worth 15 points more than getting an A in an AS Level for doing something that you probably do for fun anyway!
No matter how young or old you are you can take music exams. You could be a keen 10 year old who is already good enough to take Grade 8 or an adult starting from scratch. We have had many students who have been selected to play in the Associated Board’s High Scorers Concerts: This is a great honour as it’s celebrating the achievements of those who got the highest marks in exams set by a world-renowned examining board. One such student is Vicky Osborne who decided to take up the viola in her mid-30s and achieved distinction level in her Grade 1 exam.
It's just over a year since I started studying the viola at Acam Music and in that short time my achievements have been remarkable; I've passed my grade 1 viola exam achieving a distinction, I've been invited to perform at the prestigious ABRSM high scorer's concert, I've taken up a second instrument in the form of the classical guitar and I'm set to take my Grade 3 theory of music exam in a couple of weeks. As a mature student I'm really proud of the successes that I've realised and much of the credit for them goes to the patience, knowledge and enthusiasm shown by my teacher. (Vicky Osborne)

no exams?
Of course, not every student's aim in learning a musical instrument or singing is to enter for exams.
Lessons and courses are tailored to the needs and aims of the students in order to draw out their full musical potential.
concerts
ACAM Music provide performance opportunities throughout the year for interested students.
Generally, these concerts are linked to charity fundraising and over the years we have raised substantial amounts for Macmillan Nurses and Cynthia Spencer Cancer charities.

singing...
We cover a wide range of singing styles including classical, jazz, pop & rock.
A typical lesson will commence with vocal warm-ups to improve your technique.
The main part of the lesson will be to master one or two songs which are chosen depending upon course type and general suitability.
All solo courses are developed as a joint venture between the student and teacher. This means that, although some discipline is vital, there can be a certain amount of flexibility with regard to material and the pace at which the course progresses.
The major musical examining boards regard the voice as an instrument in it's own right so it is possible to gain qualifications in singing, both in the pop and classical styles. If appropriate to your needs and abilities we can help you achieve these.
We also give opportunities to perform and advice on microphone technique.

We provide courses in all the following instruments and can usually design one to suit most individuals and groups!
If you can't find the instrument that you would like to learn - call us and we will find you a suitable teacher.

Learning an instrument
At Acam Music we currently offer tuition in clarinet, flute, recorder, saxophone, guitar, viola, violin, keyboard and piano.

If you are not sure which instrument you would be most suited to book in for a consultation session so that you can try them all!

Whilst learning an instrument you will learn to read music and to play in many styles. There are opportunities to play solo and with other instrumentalists, singers and CD backings. We can also coach you to gain qualifications and perform.
Woodwind
Tuition is available in Clarinet, Flute, Recorder & Saxophone.
Strings
Tuition in guitar, ukulele, viola & violin are extremely popular.
Keyboard Instruments
Arguably, the most versatile of instruments. Tuition in keyboard & piano.
Theory of Music is the study of writing music down and understanding how sheet music should be played. It's learnt to some extent as part of learning to play an instrument but needs to be separated into a subject of it's own to be learnt in detail.
It's an essential subject for those who wish to have a career in any branch of classical music: Performers, composers, arrangers, orchestrators, publishers the list could go on. Anyone who wants to play an instrument to a high standard really needs to understand the theory of the music they play. Most instrumentalists need Grade 5 theory before they can take Grade 6 on their instrument.
Aural tests are part of most practical examinations and entail such exercises as singing back phrases, clapping rhythms and talking about expression in music.
An accomplished aural test can make a great deal of difference to the overall mark of an examination
