Geylang is a part of the country that is situated in the eastern region of the main business district of Singapore.

Singapore is a small sea locked island country in the continent of Asia. It is situated in the south eastern part of the continent. This small country is situated at the tip of the Malayan Peninsula and comprises of about Sixty three small islands. The country is a developed one and is a very important commercial area of the region. The country is divided into various parts most of which are urban and sub urban areas.

It might have derived its name from the word of “Gelang” of the Malayan Language. Like the entire place in Singapore Geylang too has a Tropical Rainforest type climate. It is situated to the east of the Singapore River. The place is situated near the Singapore’s first commercial Airport, which was built in the year 1937 and the Airport Traffic control Tower is preserved to date. During the British rule the place was considered to be outside the limits of the city, thus leading to the construction of the Airport. The old Airport roads are the testament to its hay-days. The old hangars have been transformed into new shopping malls by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and are well connected to the nearby Kallang Station.

The development of Geylang is taking place by the main trunk road, which leads to the Paya Lebar Military Base up to the Changi Airport. Small business are being set up by entrepreneurs from India, China etc. these businesses include suppliers of woods for various purpose, merchants of iron, flooring tiles, rubber etc.

The architecture of Geylang has a unique distinctive characteristic as it has preserved its shop-houses which were used by the clan associations and built during the 1840s and the 1940s for the new comers to integrate into the customs and the traditions of the local people. The city has expanded outwards with the construction of the new residential shop houses along with hotels and restaurants. The place has a one of a kind Gay World amusement park, which is situated close to the Kallang airport.

The area of Geylang is composed of the north section and south section, which is situated on the opposite sides of the Geylang road. From the main road, throughout its entire length small lanes stretch out into the main city and the lanes on the north side are give odd numbers and that to the south are given even numbers.

Geylang is well known for its Durian shops. The Shop-houses here are protected from demolition to uphold the regions heritage. It is the also the Red light district of Singapore.

Geylang is well connected by roads and the railways. There are a number of MRT Stations situated close to the Geylang Road and there is the Geylang Bus Terminal too providing connectivity to various other parts of the region.

Geylang holds an important place in the history of Singapore and now with its upcoming developments the future of Geylang surely seems bright.
