The SSII is a Think Tank/ Training Institute headed by Dr. Shireen M. Mazari. It has a fulltime faculty of 5 as well as external specialist teachers and 2 full time Research Associates plus 5 graduate interns. The institute offers Diplomas and Certificates in Strategic Studies & Arms Control and Disarmament.

The purpose behind the setting up of the SSII is to offer an alternate narrative from the Western one for the following purposes:

One, to establish a dedicated academic and research institution for the purpose of carrying out research, training and conducting specific diploma courses - with an aim to expanding the existing insufficient pool of experts in specialized fields of international relations beginning with Arms Control and Disarmament as well as related issues pertaining to strategic security.

Two, to build the academic and research capacity through specially designed activities of universities, institutions and organizations (Governmental and Non-Governmental dealing with vital issues of national security) focusing on international relations, specifically in the issue of Strategic Studies so as to create an effective interface between the public/private sector institutions/organisations and policy making organisations and facilitate informed decision making. Also, to be able to provide intensive research-based inputs for policy-making institutions.

Three, to establish a platform for initiating constructive discussion and debate through organising seminars, conferences, workshops and public lectures on issues of national interest.

Four, to develop and enter into mutually beneficial MoUs with important think tanks, academic institutions and universities inside and outside the country. Included in this goal is the provision of a sustainable programme of exchange of young scholars/interns with relevant institutions and organisations within the country and abroad.
