THE MERCY NIKETAN is a school for special children (Mentally Challenged and Spastic Children) situated in Tondiarpet, in the labour intensive region of North Chennai. It is managed by R. J. Charitable Trust, registered as a charitable trust under the Indian Trust Act. About forty five special children and twenty-five normal ( siblings of special children, orphans and some who are under guardian-care) students from very poor families are taken care of by the school. The school imparts basic education, evening tuition and essential training in particular needs of such children. The care includes Special education, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy and counseling. In the case of children who cannot be afforded medication, the school provides medical care too. Training is given according to each ones capacity with special teaching materials and tools. Many of these children need special education and training in their activities of daily living like eating, dressing, toileting, grooming, self-help, self hygiene and good manners. Meticulous care and patience is shown towards them.
