Durga Charan High School, Bhagalpur 3.38

Durga charan high school bhagalpur(A BENGALI MEDIUM HIGH SCHOOL) established in the year 1935 & got govt. recognition upto matriculation w.e.f 01/01/1938.This institution has got a history of its own. Bengalees of bhagalpur felt the necessity of an institution, where education could be imparted to their young children through the medium of their mother tongue. so in 1860 an infant school was started & classes were held in the drawing rooms of babu durga charan banerjee(F/O- RAJA SHIB CHANDRA BANERJEE) initially, later on a mudwall building was constucted for this school & genorous Bengalees of BGP contributed for construction of existing pucca building for lower school. Gradually this infant school grew under the tender care of babu durga charan banerjee. Subsequently a managing commitee was formed to have control over the institution. in 1882 Babu Durga Charan Banerjee placed a sum of Rs.500/- in the hands of managing commitee through his son Raja shib chandra banerjee for the development of the institution. The managing commitee by its resolution dated 22nd April 1882 resolved that the school be named as DURGA CHARAN SCHOOL, BHAGALPUR.In 1892 BIPRADAS GANGULI (Maternal uncle of sharat chandra chattopadhay) donated a sum of Rs-400 to M.C OF SCHOOL In memory of his father Kedar Nath Ganguly(who died in Jan-1892) to award a medal to the students, who secured highest marks in sanskrit in board exam. every year.

In 1908 the M.C of the school by its resolution dated 12th January 1908 resolved that the status of the school be raised to middle standard. Subsiquently got govt. approval.

In 1932 Harendra krishna Bagchi, then secretary (M.C.) of the school conceived the idea of developing this school into HIGH SCHOOL & on recomendation of Mr.Hallet,the then commissioner of the division, secured a lease a piece of land (.5330Hectares approx 57404sq ft) for this school from bhagalpur municipality for 99 years from 1st. April 1933 at an annual rental of rupees one only.The foundation stone of this building was laid by G.E.Fawcus Esqr.C.I.E., O.B.E. the then Director of Public Instruction on 2nd march 1936.

In 1935 class VIII was started with the sanctioned of divisional inspector of schools & 9th, 10thin 1936,1937 respectively. In this period classes were held in BHAGALPUR INSTITUTE building .After completion of new school building completed in the year 1937.
Total cost of the building was approx. 11000. The nothern block was constructed in 1938 at cost of Rs-2157/-. After completion of high school building in 1937 class 4th to 10th was shifted to New high school building near lajpat park .
