Mechanical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design and manufacture of all mechanical objects. Mechanical engineers use applied maths and science to design a wide range of ‘machines’ from domestic household appliances to sophisticated machines such as aircraft and automobiles.

The Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering has been designed to train highly skilled engineering technicians for the challenges of modern machine and product design. To date over 700 students have graduated from the course.

The success of these students in the workplace, has gained the course an excellent reputation with employers, for students who are knowledgeable, practical and flexible. The graduate profile is wide and varied, with students finding work in the pharmaceutical and biomedical manufacturing, automation, agriculture engineering and technical sales.

While semi skilled and labour-intensive manufacturing has declined in Ireland in recent years, the demand for highly skilled mechanical and manufacturing engineers has increased. If Ireland is to remain competitive as a manufacturing location, it needs to continuously innovate and invest in new technologies such as robotics and automation.
