Makar Farms was established in the 1880s and has been a major vegetable, salad and herb provider for the past 40 years. We combine hydroponic farming and traditional farming practices to bring you innovative, fresh and colourful products. We are proud holders of the CERES and USDA organic certification.

Established in 1880, “Makar Farms” located on the Sakkara road, has always been the avant-garde of agriculture in Egypt. In the late 1940s, substantial crop changes were implemented by George Makar, an agricultural Engineer who studied at the University of Agriculture of Grignon in France. He first concentrated his efforts on introducing new varieties of fruits adapting them to the climate in Egypt. George Makar started introducing varieties unknown to the Egyptian consumer such as frisée, scarole, together with herbs such as tarragon and thyme…etc.
The basic idea was to invert the seasons of crops grown in Europe: What is produced in summer can be available in Egypt during the winter season.
Among the spectacular successes of George Makar was the introduction of endive, a crop that grows in the northern part of Europe at very low temperatures!

Makar Farms is currently led by Mounir Makar, a banker and an economist, who took up farming after the farm was passed down from his father.

Since then, endives production, as well as the production of other crops, was taken to another level: Makar Farms was the first in Egypt to introduce hydroponic system to grow plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water, without soil. However, we never abandoned traditional farming which is why we combine new technology with traditional farming knowledge!

Our passion for farming is not the only source of inspiration. In fact, our interest in cuisine encourages us to continuously search for new varieties and "foreign" products in order to live up to the motto of innovation.

Makar farms is the place to find assortments of vegetables and herbs that are rarely found in Egypt. Whether you are looking for broccoli, thyme, tarragon, brussels sprouts, cherry tomatoes, asparagus or "uncommon" salad varieties, you can be sure to find them in our farms. This is why our clients include the Four Seasons Hotels, Fairmont Hotels, Gourmet Egypt and many more.

On 6 August 2013, Makar farms obtained the CERES organic certification for the majority of its products (Certificate No. 19516). CERES is accredited by the US Department of Agriculture USDA.

تأسست عزبة مقار في عام 1880 وهي تقع على طريق سقارة وتعتبر عائلة مقار رائد من رواد الزراعة في مصر .

في نهاية الأربعينيات نجح المهندس جورج مقار ، وهو مهندس زراعي تخرج من جامعة جرينيون الفرنسية الشهيرة ، نجح في إدخال تغييرات جذرية في الزراعة لاسيما في البداية على أنواع الفاكهة حيث أدخل أنواعاً جديدة وعمل على مواءمتها للظروف المناخية في مصر .

وإستمرت هذه المجهودات حتى نهاية الستينيات وأوائل السبعينيات حيث ركز مجهوداته في مجال زراعة الخضروات غير التقليدية في مصر ونجح مرة أخرى في إدخال أشهر الخضروات الأوروبية والتي لم يكن يعرفها المستهلك المصري من قبل ، مثل ( أنواع الخس ، الهندباء ، إسكارول وأيضاً أنواع من الأعشاب مثل الإستراجون والزعتر ، الخ ...)

بل وأكثر من ذلك فقد أثمرت مجهوداته نتائجاً مذهلة فيما يتعلق بتغيير مواسم الزراعة ، فما كان يُزرع في أوروبا في فصل الصيف قام هو بزراعته في مصر في فصل الشتاء وبجودة عالية .

وقد أدخلنا زراعة منتج الهندباء في مصر منذ ثلاثين عاماً وهو يعتبر من أهم الإنجازات التي حققناها ، حيث أنه ينمو في مناخ شديد البرودة وفي ظل ظروف خاصة . إلا أنه بفضل الأبحاث والتجارب والمجهودات المستمرة التي قمنا بها ، إستطعنا أن نتحدى الطبيعة ونجحنا في زراعة الهندباء في مصر بالرغم من إختلاف المناخ بل وأكثر من ذلك تستمر فترة الإنتاج على مدار العام وبنفس الجودة العالمية .

منير مقار هو خبير إقتصادي ، تولى نشاط الزراعة كهواية بعد والده ، ثم تحولت الهواية الى عشق هذا النشاط الذي قاده الى التطوير المستمر في الزراعة وذلك بإدخال أصناف جديدة من المحاصيل ، وكذلك التطوير في التقنيات التي كان لابد منها لإزالة عقبة كبيرة جداً في الزراعة ، ألا وهي حرارة الصيف .

عندما تولى منير مقار المزرعة بعد والده ، إنتقل إنتاج الهندباء و بعض المحاصيل الأخرى ، الى مستوى آخر ، فقد أدخل منير مقار نظام متطور جديد وهو
Hydroponic System وبذلك أصبح يشكل سابقة في مصر .
إن عشقنا للزراعة ليس المصدر الوحيد لإلهامنا ، ولكن اهتمامنا بالطهي يشجعنا على البحث دائماً عن أنواع جديدة خارجية ، من أجل الإبتكار
ونتيجة لذلك ، معظم أبحاثنا موجهه نحو إيجاد سبل للحد من ارتفاع درجات الحرارة التي نواجهها في فصل الصيف . وبذلك يتحدى إنتاج محاصيل شتوية عالية الجودة في مصر في فصل الصيف بنفس جودتها في فصل الشتاء .
