The University of Dhaka (commonly referred to as Dhaka University), is the oldest university in Bangladesh. It is a multidisciplinary research university. Established in 1921 by the British Government in India, the university was modeled on Oxbridge education.

During its early years, Dhaka University hosted scholars and scientists of the Indian Subcontinent, earning a reputation as the Oxford of the East. In the 1920s, one of its professors, Satyendra Nath Bose, worked with Albert Einstein in producing the Bose-Einstein condensate. In the following decades, the students and teachers of this university shaped the history of Bangladesh, playing a central role in the Bengali Language Movement and Bangladesh's freedom struggle. In March 1971, the Pakistan Army launched Operation Searchlight at the university, massacring students and intellectuals, and sparking off the Bangladesh Liberation War.

As of 2012, the university has a student body of 33,000 and a faculty of 1,805. It is the largest public university in Bangladesh and is the only university from the country to be listed on AsiaWeek’s top 100 Universities in Asia. Its campus is spread across a large area of Ramna, in central Dhaka.
