The intent urge of the Trustees of Gono Shaystha Kendra to provide service to the people primarily worked in the establishment of the department albeit also to cater to the increasing demand of pharmacy graduates was rightly visualized . The Kendro had already a Pharmaceutical Enterprise (Gono Shyastha Pharmaceutical Ltd. GPL ), an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient production unit ( Gonoshayatha Antibiotics Ltd.) under its umbrella. The concept of introducing an academic programme in the vicinity of these enterprises was a well thought out plan.

The department aims at producing quality graduates. The objectives are:

To elevate the level of Pharmaceutical education, research and management

To provide leadership in pharmaceutical sciences, technology and management in the country

To provide facilities for curriculum and media development by revision of curriculum from time to time and preparing a variety of institutional resources

To be center of innovation in pharmaceutical sciences and technology not only for the industry but also for making in depth studies on drug surveillance, functioning community and institutional pharmacies and pharmaceutical management

To provide scientific footing to traditional medicine and bring out scientific and the sociological aspects of drugs’ use and abuse, family planning, rural pharmacy etc

Course offered and its Philosophy:

The department offers a four year Bachelor of Pharmacy ( Honours Course). The program comprises of 163 credit hours spread over eight semesters, each of 26 weeks’ duration.

The undergraduate course is so designed that the students in the first four semesters receive the conceptual knowledge about the basic topics. In order to ensure this objective the students are offered complementary courses in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics and Environmental Science as well as English and Bengali. In the next four semesters more emphasis is given on Pharmaceutical Analysis, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology. Also a great deal of emphasis is designed for Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy as well as for marketing and management.

In Plant training is an integral part of B.Pharm course. The objective of the programme is to expose the students to the activities of a pharmaceutical industry. Under this programme each student is required to work as an intern in a pharmaceutical industry for 4 to 6 weeks. As a part of the programme each student has to prepare a report under the supervision of a Senior Pharmacist of the relevant enterprise, which is duly evaluated for finalization of the student’s results.

Naturally great emphasis is placed upon practical work. In the 7th and 8th semesters the students carry out research projects. The research topics cover a wide range of issues related to pharmaceutical science.
