The idea of Reading Angels came to me through a series of enquiries via Nepean Tutoring for a tutor to read books to emerging readers. Parents were observing that the magic of printed picture books was being lost in a sea of technology where children preferred to play on tablets and interact with computer games. They asked if we provided a service for younger students where tutors could read books to their child, play reading games and instil a life-long love of books into their child’s extremely important early learning experience

As a child, books had been my favourite pasttime. I had various areas in my family home where I would sit for hours immersed in the places that books would take me. The worlds of the characters, an understanding for the interesting settings and the way language was used to inspire me to read more, has remained an integral component of who I am today. This engagement in books is indeed a dying desire in our young folk and one which Reading Angels can ignite in your child.

Reading Angels will read books to your child; but more than this. They will assist your child to explore the words in books that will develop a richer vocabulary and an understanding for the world around them. They will grow in the areas of 1) how to identify sounds 2) how to read words and pronounce them correctly and 3) how to use interesting words in their own writing.

Moreover reading is all about engagement and a desire to participate. Reading Angels have a basket full of lovely activities for young children. Your child might participate in an art or craft activity related to the story being read, retell the story using finger or hand puppets or simply sequence pictures of the stories in context. The interests and needs of the child is paramount to the success of the program, thus a child centred approach is pivotal to the success of the Reading Angels program.

Each term, workshops on story telling and art and craft will be held to keep the wheels of engagement turning. Children will be invited to make dioramas, use natural materials to construct craft items and to use art and other mediums to compliment their own stories.

Reading Angels is about whetting the imagination. It is about giving children the freedom to create and nurture the inner child that is often lost in a wave of 21st century technology. Through beautiful books and activities your child will have the opportunity to be in a learning environment that will inspire them for future literary endeavours.
