My name is Meredith and I have been sowing for as long as I can remember. I have been doing it for over 50 years.

My mother introduced me to the sewing machine over 50 years ago. I would sit under her feet at the old Singer treadle machine and play with the foot control. It didn’t take long before I was creating clothes for my dolls and learning how to sew straight lines with the machine.

My mother would only show you how to do something once then you had to pick it up yourself. So at the age of 11, with her suitcase full of scraps I progressed onto creating skirts and dresses and tackling the obscure instructions that you find with patterns.

I remember my Year 8 Home Economics classes and making my beautiful skirted apron with lovely hand embroidery on the bodice. I skipped Home Economics in Year 9 and 10 but the lure of the cooking and sewing brought me back to the subject for Yr 11 and 12.

My Year 11 Home Economics teacher, Mrs Pam Drillis was so inspirational that I considered Home Economics teaching as a career and this is what I did.

I bought my first sewing machine from my savings from my part time job during school. It was one of those little Elna Lotus’s that had the drop down sides. Being a girl from the bush it had to do whilst I was at Teacher’s College in Brisbane. I’m still amazing at what I was able to create on that machine. Tailored jackets and my sister’s bridesmaid's dresses to name a couple.

On a visit to the Ekka from Hervey Bay (my first school) during the school holidays, I spent up big and bought myself a top of the range Elna Air Electronic. I had this machine for 20 years; it made wedding dresses and costumes for Rock Eisteddfods, costumes for ballet concerts, formal dresses etc etc. Along the way I’ve had a few overlockers as well.

So now after entering retirement, I have a huge stash of fabrics and as I make my way through these you will see different things being made. Being able to create wonderful articles of clothing using nothing but raw material, a trusty sewing machine and a little bit of imagination and determination is something that brings me a lot of joy.
