Expert camel handlers from Afghanistan and their camels were imported by the various Australian Colonies to supply the many arid parts of Australia with water, food and other necessities during the 1800’s and early 1900’s. They were known as the “Afghan Cameleers”,
For the Colonies to federate it was essential to connect them by telegraph and by railways constructed with the help of the Afghan Cameleers.
Descendants of the Afghan Cameleers, like many Australian’s, have fought and died to protect the values we all hold dear.
The Maree mosque, the first mosque in Australia, was built in northern South Australia in 1861 and was followed by the Broken Hill mosque, in New South Wales, 16 years later.

“Madina”, is a proudly Australian business contributing to the community since it was established in 2006 by an Afghan-Australian, 145 years after Afghan- Australian’s built the Maree Mosque.
Inspired by this fusion of Eastern and Western traditions Madina can supply Eastern glamour in a modern Western cut, or Western styles for those seeking more modest clothes because of health or cultural reasons.
We also provide a styling service for women who need to cover their hair with a scarf for a special occasion. Each scarf is hand fitted and styled on the day of the event and cannot be copied, this ensures you will have no imitators at your special event. This service may also include make up for an additional fee.
We also serve the needs of practicing Muslims with a range of supplies to suit their needs.
