Asia Wise Education Program for Years 7-10 3.16

Asia Wise is a full fledged program of work on Asia. The Asia Wise Program is drawn directly from the Australian Curriculums for History and Geography and is designed for history and geography classes at lower (yrs 7 & 8) and upper (yrs 9 & 10) levels. Asia Wise is based on the premise that the best teaching is done by teachers. Our aim is to provide a quality resource for teachers that frees up their time in class to work with individuals and small groups to develop students’ skills and knowledge and to provide stimulating topics that will challenge and engage students of all levels.

Teachers can use the Asia Wise Program at three levels:

**The Asia Wise Challenge**
The Asia Wise Challenge is a stand alone introductory exercise that provides teachers with the opportunity to develop students’ research skills and General Capabilities in an Asian context. Students have up to four hours to complete their research and answer the questions using any resources available. This allows teachers to work with students to develop their General Capabilities and makes Asia Wise a powerful tool to assist teachers in implementing the new curriculum.

**Asia Wise In Depth**
When students have finished the Asia Wise Challenge they select the topic that most interests them. They can then do a Depth Study on that topic. In this stage students develop higher order organizational, writing and presentation skills and a greater depth of knowledge of the key areas specified in the curriculum. While slower students who need more help at the foundation level can be assisted by the teacher, more able students can be stretched in the depth study.

**Asia Wise Attitudes**
This part of the program encourages teachers to use the topics from the Asia Wise Challenge as a catalyst to stimulate class discussions or formal debates and role-plays. Each year the Asia Wise Challenge includes topics that are designed to stimulate discussion and debate that will enhance students’ cultural understanding and empathy, comprehension of geo-politics and appreciation of the mutual benefits of increasing economic interdependence.
