The Privacy & Sustainable Computing Lab is a new research laboratory on privacy and ethical computing, driven by scientific research that is launched in the course of this event. The lab is based at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) and runs as a joint venture between the Institute for Management Information Systems (Prof. Dr. Sarah Spiekermann) and the Institute for Information Business (Prof. Dr. Axel Polleres). It is led by Dr. Sabrina Kirrane. The Lab currently has a staff of around ten full-time employees. It is building privacy technologies and is influencing technical standards. It conducts market- and user studies that inform privacy policy-making. Lab members are part of international standardization bodies. They actively co-operate with NGOs, activists, policy makers and industry. The goal is to make European standards on data protection work in practice and develop new ways to build ethical and hence sustainable IT systems.
