Vermont Centre situated in Knysna takes care of the elderly that have nowhere else to go.
Unfortunately most people cannot afford private care when they are old and helpless. Prices range from R5500.00 per month to as much as R16 000.00!!!
More often than not, there is no way a family can afford to pay that for their parents either.
So what do these people do? Where do they go?
That is where Vermont comes into the picture. It doesn't matter if you are white, black, coloured or Indian - if they can help you they will.
Vermont was established about twenty years ago and all they charge their patients is a portion of their monthly government pension.
Patients get three balanced meals a day, coffee and tea and filtered water. Vermont supplies toiletries like soap, shampoo deodorant etc.
Nappies for the frail are also supplied as well as medication.
A doctor also visits the patients on a weekly basis.
Most of these people have nothing, have been abandoned by their families and never or seldom ever have any visitors.
Vermont tries to take care of not only the physical needs of their patients but emotional as well. Everybody here is somebody, is treated with respect.
Vermont looks after people from all over the country.
Patients from as far as Welkom in the Free State live here.
Vermont is totally dependant on donations so please find it in your heart to contribute towards this worthy cause.
One thing about taking care of the elderly is one can ask oneself: "Who will take care of me one day?"
