Sebamed was founded in 1957 by Dr. Heinz Maurer, a true pioneer of medical skin care. In 1952 Dr. Maurer made the crucial discovery at the Dermatological clinic of the University of Bonn, namely that the skin's slightly acidic surface protects against harmful environment influences such as dehydration, germs and bacteria. The discovery of this ‘protective acid mantle’ of the skin kick-started an intensive and long lasting research period, which eventually led to the new market for medicinal skin cleansing and care.

The first ‘soap-free cleansing bar’ was put into production in 1957. This bar was made to correspond to the physiological skin pH value of 5.5. Dr Maurer provoked the medical world by famously stating: "People have been washing themselves incorrectly for 2000 years." His ideas found wide acceptance by pharmacies and met great approval among dermatologists as his invention also enabled the washing of infected and irritated skin, which had been impossible before. In 1967 Dr. Mauer founded SebamatChemie GmbH and manufactured the first sebamed products and with that a new chapter of medical body care was opened.
