OUR ORIGINS go back to about 1830 and the ministry of the Rev Adam Robson of the London Missionary Society.

“Union Church” was built on the corner of Chapel and Victoria Streets in 1833, and “Free Church” people of all races made use of this building for worship. In 1853 the “New Church” was built in Main Street, and the Rev J Harsant appointed its first minister. Not long after this the Baptists withdrew to begin their own church, and a few years later the Presbyterians left to establish their church on the Hill. In 1879 the “New Church” was sold and work begun on our present building in Pearson Street. The foundation stone of the Pearson Street Congregational Church was laid on January 5th, 1880, and the building was opened for worship on Sunday, September 25th, 1881.

Today we are a constituent church of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, which is a multiracial denomination of about 750 000, with churches in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique.
WORSHIP
Gathering of God’s people to celebrate, to pray, to discern the mind of God, to hear God’s Word and to meditate, to sing, to read the Bible in our context, to renew of commitment continuously, the commissioning of God’s people to do what He requires of us. We celebrate the sacraments of Baptism & Holy Communion.

OUR FAMILY AT WORSHIP
We are a growing congregation of about 350 members; and we come from all over the city: from Summerstrand to Amsterdamhoek right through to Uitenhage. In fact we have families in practically every area of Port Elizabeth. As a result of our covering such a large area, and in order to still be a caring and involved congregation, we have divided ourselves into areas, in which members have a particular concern for one another, under the leadership of a Deacon.
