Head Start is an after school extra mural activity that is either run from the school premises or a satellite location. Each lesson is approximately 45 minutes. All equipment and extras will be brought onto the premises and cleared away again by our Head Start facilitator.
The Head Start program has been designed in conjunction with an Occupational Therapist, and focuses on improving general strengthening and co-ordination as well as developing pre-sporting skills. The program follows the child’s natural developmental progression which creates a firm foundation of core skills from which the more refined skills can develop.
Games and obstacle courses are used to target Gross Motor and Fine Motor development as well as Sensory Exploration. These together are the building blocks for early childhood development which eventually influence the child’s classroom abilities, sporting experience and social confidence.
Our aim is to build each child’s strength, skills and confidence in a positive, challenging and fun environment. While providing parents with relevant feedback on development progress, highlights or concerns.

What makes us different?
Our program has been specifically designed in conjunction with an Occupational Therapist who will also assist with an initial screening of each child. Thereafter the Head Start facilitator will provide a progress report once a term, ensuring that parents and teachers are kept up to date.

Each lesson is a new set of activities and challenges. The lesson will begin with stretching, helping to solidify good sporting practices. There will be a gross motor activity involving the use of the body as a whole. This will promote strengthening, bi-lateral understanding and growth, as well as a fine motor activity promoting concentration, co-ordination and aiding in the cooling down process.
The children are encouraged to confront each challenge positively and to work together where necessary, promoting perseverance, strengths awareness, leadership and a team concept.
