Got Wheels? and the K53-at-School is a project run by myself. Who am I, you may ask? Well, I am teacher / tutor and have worked with students of all ages (special needs, remedial, F.E.T. and adult learners included) in numerous different educational settings, both in South Africa and abroad. A few years ago, I was given the opportunity to take over the oldest (22 years to be precise) and most well-known driving school on the West Rand.

During this time, I came to realise that a certain need exists and that is the K53 made simple. Parents find themselves buying one of the many copies of the K53 manual, only to return home to a child that has homework to do, tests and exams to study for, not to mention sporting and other extra-curricular activities. The result in my experience – there is no time and preparing the student to write their learner’s takes a back seat.

Even those that did somehow manage to squeeze going through the said manual into their busy routines, struggled. The reason being that every time the K53 is “updated,” older versions are not removed from the shelf, hence the obvious confusion as to what is / isn’t relevant anymore. Furthermore (and should you, out of interest, pick up such a copy) you will no doubt notice the inconsistencies from fact to fact, even in diagrams & pictures & a largely poorly written content. Because of this negligence on the part of authorities, I have come to see and speak to countless students and their parents that have struggled on their own, only for the student to fail his / her test unnecessarily. The end result? A lack of confidence to try again.

It was for this reason, that I formulated a workshop-styled class, teaching the K53 in small groups over weekends. The mere fact that students could attend with their friends and classmates almost completely removed those feelings of disappointment and so it became something enjoyable to do.

Of course I had to adapt my technique for those with learning, language and other barriers. The easy-to-grasp learning method that I employ, made it so that these candidates too, felt a part of the group.

Therefore, by purely creating a welcome and more relaxed social and emotional learning environment, I can safely say that almost half of the problem was solved.

In case you were wondering… I no longer have the capacity to facilitate these workshops from home and so, I make use of a classroom with a transparency machine or other display feature, in order to do so for a group of students at their school, eliminating several costs and other issues such as travel.

What was an old drivng school, has now been rebranded and legally registered with a mission to help South African students along what can seem to be the tedious process of attaining a learner's licence - ultimately putting more than competent, safety-concious drivers on our roads.

For R990.00, students recieve a Got Wheels? study pack and attend the workshop which spans over one weekend (mornings only). Having completed the course, students can then apply for their learner’s with confidence.

“I went to Saskia for help and lessons for my learner’s license after failing multiple times. Although with her help I passed with 6 marks above the standard pass rate. Her assistance was above and beyond what was needed and done in a very professional way. I would definitely recommend her to any & all of my friends needing to get theirs done!” - Vincenzo Paolini.
