Laurie brings 15 years of musical training to Crescendo. Determined to learn music, Laurie enrolled herself for piano lessons as child without telling her parents. Having spent years learning by ear, she passed an audition and was selected to begin piano lessons. Only when the bill came at the end of the term, did Laurie confess she had been taking lessons for weeks. By the time she had graduated high school, Laurie had completed the Trinity College London practical piano syllabus. She has studied piano under the excellent tutelage of Judith Dernier in Cape Town, before spending a year playing under Dr Jana Kovar, piano teacher at the University of Western Australia. During high school, Laurie also studied clarinet and flute, and played in various school bands.

Laurie has won several awards for her participation in music. She won an award for composition and music technology in her penultimate year of high school, and in her final year of school, Laurie won a national achievement award from the Royal School of Music for her results in her final theory exam. Laurie took music subjects up to a university level, before turning to music teaching.
