Constitutional Literacy and Service Initiative - CLASI 3.05

The Constitutional Literacy and Service Initiative (CLASI) project mobilizes South African law students to enter the public education sector through teaching constitutional law and juvenile justice in high schools in order to deepen access to justice and knowledge on the Constitution amongst South African communities.

This movement for constitutional literacy is rooted in the knowledge that constitutional law is not included in any school curriculum. We belief that students will profit for life from learning, and learning how to use, our system of rights and responsibilities as citizens and residents living under the South African Constitution. This includes teaching young South African the benefit of voting an engaging in constitutional campaigns, how lawmaking occurs and other fundamental constitutional processes. Our constitution is an amazing document globally celebrated but is however, underused and not always well understood.

Consequently, CLASI is committed to transforming legal education in South Africa and we hope to inspire future reflective legal practitioners, and to promote that this is an obtainable goal.

The CLASI head office is based at the University of Cape Town but mobilizing students at UCT, the University of the Western Cape, the University of Stellenbosch and Fort Hare University.
