Being a member of the Boran Society since 2003 – Adelson Boran has been going from strength to strength with Lizette Basson, a well known senior inspector, as the heart and soul behind Adelson Boran, this stud is backed by years of knowledge gained from cattle farming.

The stud is situated on the farm Plat Rand, in the Fauresmith district, between Luckhoff and Fauresmith, 150 km south of Bloemfontein. 50% of the pasture on the farm is edible bossie and 50% is sweet grassland combined with edible shrubs on the mountain sides and valleys. The temperatures can vary from 40°C on a warm summer day with night temperatures between 14°C and 18°C; too a low of 10°C on cool winter days with night temperatures that can go below -10°C.

Winters can get really long and has a duration of 6 month. A Change in temperatures can already be noticed, as early as the beginning of April. These low temperatures can go on until late in October and even until early November. With our cold winters, we get the paralysis tick; that are most commonly active when temperatures drop below 4°C and can only be found on the mountain sides. The paralysis tick has no effect on the adult or young boran cattle. Therefore we don’t use any tick prevention on the animals.

We believe an impressive herd must be bred out of quality animals – great care is taken in our selection so that you, our client can rest assured that this stud will meet your expectations. Adelson Boran has been breeding good quality boran genetics for 11 years now. The original three main sire lines used is 2459, 2738, 3094; and the female herd is structured out of 16 maternal lines, and are currently over 100 reproducing females strong.

Adelson Boran Stud started with only two pregnant “SP” heifers which were bought from Hlanzeni Boran (Mr David Green) from Escort, Natal in April 2003. These two heifers were bred from the 494 bloodline. In 2004 an additional two heifers was bought from KETA Boran (Mr Terry McLintock) of which only one survived.

In 2004 Adelson Boran started with embryo flushing with the sole purpose of expanding the stud and multiplying it. Adelson Boran currently has more than 34 different stud sires semen that has been collected over the period of 12 years. Mating’s are being done based on the cow’s breeding record, as well as on all the information that is available on the bulls.
