Hoàn Kiếm is an urban district of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, named after the scenic Hoàn Kiếm Lake.Hoàn Kiếm District is the downtown and commercial center of Hanoi. Most of the largest Vietnamese public corporations and bank headquarters are located here, but the central government offices are located in Ba Đình District . The Hanoi City Committee is located on Đinh Tiên Hoàng street, adjacent to the Hoàn Kiếm lake.The district has been witness to the long history of Hanoi.In the early of Lý Dynasty, in 545, the Emperor Lý Nam Đế settled his encampment, and built the wooden raft on the Tô Lịch River to defend against invasion of the Liang Dynasty.During the Nguyễn Dynasty, Emperor Minh Mạng established the province of Hanoi here in 1831.During 1954-1961, this area consisted of all of Hoàn Kiếm street, Đồng Xuân street and a part of Hàng Co street and Hàng Bài street. In 1961, all of those combined into Hoàn Kiếm street. In January 1981 the street changed its name into Hoàn Kiếm district, including 18 streets: Chương Dương, Eastern Gate, Southern Gate, Đồng Xuân, Hàng Bạc, Hàng Bài, Hàng Bồ, Hàng Bông, Hàng Buôm, Hàng Đào, Hàng Gai, Hàng Mã, Hàng Trống, Lý Thái Tổ, Phan Chu Trinh, Phúc Tân, Trần Hưng Đạo, Tràng Tiên, and hasn't been changing since then.
