As a dedicated concert-goer, Hal Real had become increasingly disenchanted over the years by the lack of rooms available for an incredible music experience. At the same time, WXPN, the radio station owned and operated by the University of Pennsylvania known for its nationally syndicated program World Cafe, had outgrown its studios and was seeking a new home. Hal's company, Real Entertainment Group, soon entered into a unique partnership between a public broadcaster and a private enterprise, sharing work space and a common philosophy. WXPN licensed the name World Cafe Live allowing for the creation of a clubhouse for the Philadelphia music community with a name that says it all.

World Cafe Live Philadelphia has featured an average of 550 ticketed shows, 200 free shows, and over 250 special events a year since opening in 2004. From hosting one of Adele's first US performances to showcasing artists such as Melody Gardot, James Blunt, and Edward Sharpe, WCL is known for bringing established artists to an intimate setting that is both artist and audience friendly.
