We call ourselves Unitarian Universalists โ a long name, but we are proud of it, because we are the only denomination in the world that describes its theology in its name!
However, some people call us "those bleeding liberals," and - they are right! In our first principle - we have seven of them - we promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Others call us "those heretics," and they are right, too. The word heretic means someone who chooses their faith, and we are that.
Yet others say, "they are tree-huggers," and they are right. While we might not actually hug trees on a daily basis, our seventh principle affirms and promotes the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. That's why we are sometimes also called, Birkenstockers, or the Prius Church. Yes, we dress casually, even for Sunday worship, and we drive hybrid cars - when we can afford them.
Clearly, Unitarian Universalists cannot be described in a few words. However, our diversity and acceptance of all genders and gender expressions, all races and ethnicities, many different theologies (including atheism) and socio-economic backgrounds, makes us quite interesting.
One UU tagline is "Nurture your spirit, and help heal the world," because those are our two driving forces: spiritual growth, and passionate social justice involvement. Our congregation here in York is no different.
If you want to know more, come and check us out on a Sunday morning! We will welcome you warmly, but will not attempt to convert or recruit you - promise!
