Our cancer program was established in 1989 as the only university-based cancer center in Orange County. The UCI Cancer Center was quickly recognized for achievements in research and treatment, in 1990 being admitted to the Association of American Cancer Institutes. In 1994 we received the coveted distinction of becoming a National Cancer Institute designated cancer center, and were awarded with the comprehensive cancer center designation in 1997. After twenty years since inception, and now named in honor of the Chao Family for their dedication and support of the Center’s mission, the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is a world-class institution, operating fully integrated research, prevention, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation programs.
