BACKGROUND
Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM) is a registered non-profit organization under 501 (c) (3).TAFM was established in 1992 to aid in the resettlement of Tibetans. The Congress under the 1990 Immigration Act granted immigrant visas to 1000 Tibetans living in India and Nepal. Under this project, with the help of volunteers and host families, 160 Tibetans were settled in the Twin Cities area in 1992-93. With the gradual re-unification of family members, the Twin Cities’ Tibetan American populations have increased to approximately 3000. Minnesota has the second largest Tibetan American community in the United States. Most of the Tibetans reside in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Tibetans arriving in Minnesota with “immigrant” status were not eligible for any public assistance programs for funds. Quite the contrary, they had to show that they could be totally self-sufficient prior to ever having set foot in the U.S. The early days were hard for the new immigrants but Tibetans have a well-deserved reputation as being sincere and hard workers. This is truly acknowledged by many employers in the Twin Cities.
