Shelby Valley High School is a public high school located in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. It i situated on flat land in the rugged mountains of eastern Kentucky. There are 597 students currently enrolled in grades 9-12. Located approximately ten miles south of Pikeville on US 23, the school receives students from three elementary schools and two middle schools.In 1990, school administrators decided to merge two local schools, Dorton High School and Virgie High School, which had both been in existence for several decades, into one. Twenty million dollars was spent on the undertaking.Nearly 3,000 students have graduated and the school boasts an Air Force Academy graduate, as well as a Harvard University graduate. The school has an Army JROTC.The school has also been noted for its boys' basketball sports program. Several players on the Valley team have been selected in university programs throughout Kentucky. Elisha Justice was 2010 Mr. Basketball and has played since for the University of Louisville Cardinals and the University of Pikeville Bears.HistoryShelby Valley is the result of the consolidation of Virgie and Dorton High Schools.The current principal is Greg Napier, assisted by vice principal Mike Tackett.Shelby Valley won the 2010 Boys' Sweet Sixteen tournament in Lexington, Kentucky.The school's logo was conceived and designed by artist and designer Mickey Glover in 2001.The school song was written in the first year the school opened by Class of 1991 graduate Darren Branham.Student activitiesThe school has excelled in sports for both girls and boys, including basketball, football, soccer, cross country, track, various academic teams, marching band and volleyball. There is also a cheering section, the Blue Crew, which has won several awards.
