New Annual Flagler College Scholarship - The Penny Willis-Wools Scholarship

A scholarship to Flagler College in memory of Penny Lou Willis-Wools, who recently passed away due to cancer on February 6, 2013, has been established in July 2015 by Mary Tarver Willis and Penny's SAHS classmate Susan Ponder-Stansel. Penny was a graduate with honors of Flagler College, Class of 1978 and a St. Augustine High School graduate of 1975. Penny was the daughter of Fred V. Willis, Jr. and Mary Tarver Willis, both graduates of Ketterlinus High School, Class of 1939 & Class of 1947, respectively. She was married to Stephen H. Wools of Fort Lauderdale.

Penny was an honor student and a cheerleader during high school. In 1975 she was St. Augustine's Junior Miss and represented the city at the state pageant in Pensacola. She was a talented and outstanding ballet dancer under the tutelage of Pamela and Larry Leonard of Leonard's Studio. At Flagler College she continued her ballet, and taught a class on Saturdays. Penny studied Spanish and Latin American studies with Dr. Dawn Wiles while at Flagler College.

After graduation, Penny pursued a banking career, with the focus on international banking. Using her Spanish language skills, she traveled many times to South America to oversee the refinancing of many governmental loans. Penny worked first in Jacksonville, then Miami and Fort Lauderdale, where she because a Vice-President with B.B.&T. Bank.

The Penny Willis-Wools Scholarship will be offered to any St. Augustine High School current or past graduate who is attending or is about to attend Flagler College pursuing any area of college study thanks to the support of Ms. Mary Willis and Ms. Susan Ponder-Stansel. The scholarship will be administered on an annual basis by the St. Augustine/Ketterlinus High School Alumni Association in coordination with Flagler College. If anyone is interested in further honoring Penny or wants further information on the scholarship, please contact either the SA/KHS Alumni Association at 904-819-1799.

Jackets Forever Endowment Fund

Last year in conjunction with their 50th reunion, the Class of ‘64 raised a total of $7,420 for the Jackets Forever Endowment Fund. With the additions from other Yellow Jacket Alumni ($4.099.96) as well as the funds raised by the Class of 63’ ($16,546.00), the total contributions into the Endowment Fund as of June 30, 2015 was $28,065.96.

Again, a challenge is issued to each successive class interested in contributing to the Jackets Forever Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund is specifically designed to help fund college scholarships for graduating SAHS seniors. An investment policy was created by the organizing committee for the Endowment Fund and adopted by the Alumni Association board of directors. The Endowment Fund remains under the nonprofit umbrella of the Alumni Association in a separate account. The intention is to allow the fund principal to grow and produce sufficient income to meet the objective and purpose of our organization. Copies of the investment policy are available upon request. The Alumni Association board wishes to again thank the Endowment Committee for their hard work and diligence in accepting the responsibility of overseeing the fund.

For anybody or any Alumni Class interested in contributing to our Endowment Fund efforts or if any past Alumni are interested in setting up a scholarship in someone’s name such as the one’s described previously, please call (904) 819-1799.
