Positive Connections, formerly the Topeka AIDS Project (TAP) was organized in 1985 by a small group of volunteers who were coordinating care for a friend with AIDS.At that time community resources for HIV+ individuals were non-existent. Health clinics and nursing homes were reluctant to accept people with HIV/AIDS as clients. Early services were provided by volunteer care-giving teams, who often gave around-the-clock care in an individual's home.
TAP grew and changed along with HIV/AIDS. With the development of new, more effective treatments for HIV, TAP went from helping HIV+ clients die with dignity to helping meet clients' social, legal, educational, and medical needs to improve their long-term quality of life.
In October 2011, Topeka AIDS Project officially changed its name to Positive Connections. This change reflects its larger service area, its shift to comprehensive medical case management to improve quality of life for HIV+ clients, and the expansion of prevention and education programming to include Hepatitis C and other sexually transmitted infections.
