The organization of the Pikeville Church of God began in 1924 in Bledsoe County. The first church building was located at the foot of the mountain, less than one mile from our Sequatchie Road location. It was only a one-room church, heated with a pot-bellied stove in the winter and cooled with hand fans in the summer. The Lord's Supper and Foot Washing services were regular events attended by many. A pump organ, spoons, and guitars provided music and the nearby rivers provided a means of baptisms. The early church rules were stict: no coffee, cokes, gum chewing, jewelry, or tobacco in any form. The women wore long hair and always wore dresses.
The property on Sequatchie Road was purchased during the year of 1941 or 1942 during the pastorship of Bro. Joe Colston. The church on Sequatchie Road and parsonage were built in 1948 with Bro. Combs as pastor. Since the original building there, the congregation added a fellowship hall, 3 classrooms, remodeled the parsonage and church, built a carport on the parsonage, created a larger church kitchen, and installed a Baptistry.
In July of 1995, the Pikeville Church of God negotiated for a new parcel of land (18 acres) located along a prime strip of U.S. Hwy. 127 South. The cost of the $82,500 has long been paid, along with the building of a pavilion.
Although ground broke for the new church building in 2003, many long hours, days, and months have passed in building the new church on Hwy. 127. Many times issues arose that gave the impression that this new construction was not meant to be completed. Many of the older saints that dreamed to see the completion of this project has since made heaven their home and aren't here to begin this new journey with us.
May we make them proud as we venture into 2011 together.
