Intimate Opera Theater! Pittsburgh Festival Opera

Presenting innovative opera for imaginative audiences. Now in its 40th year, Pittsburgh Festival Opera is Western Pennsylvania's modern music drama company, focusing on creating new works, on reinterpreting older works in new ways, on building diversity in programming and casting, on supporting emerging talent, and on broadening audiences through outreach and education under the artistic direction of Jonathan Eaton.

In 2018, the Festival feature a month of Mainstage operas: Intimate. Innovative. Operas, sung in English, a Broadway musical, a children's opera, vocal recitals, themed opening night parties, late night cabaret, and more! Following two weeks on tour, the summer season continues in the beautifully renovated Falk Auditorium on the campus of Winchester Thurston School in Shadyside.

The company's 28th world premiere, A GATHERING OF SONS, was presented in 2017 and excerpts from candidates for our next Music That Matters series opera will be heard as we initiate A FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT commissioning project. Also a stellar Recital Series, cabaret events, a family opera, and much more. Festival Mainstage is the state-of-the-art Falk Auditorium at Winchester Thurston School, Shadyside.

The company will produce THE RING CYCLE in Jonathan Dove's acclaimed English language version, beginning with RHINEGOLD in 2018 and continuing with a new opera each eason and the entire cycle in 2021.

Since its founding in 1978 by Mildred Miller Posvar, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh has served a diverse market of music drama audiences in Western Pennsylvania. By presenting high-quality productions of music drama not available elsewhere, the company works at the forefront of the genre. In its 40-year history, Opera Theater has presented more than 50 Pittsburgh premieres, many of them American operas that would not have been produced by other regional companies.
