“Newport Golf Club was established in 1920 as a nine-hole layout designed by Scottish professional Willie Park Jr… Most recently in 1989-1991, architects Phil Wogan and George F Sargent Jr., performed a full makeover, extending the course to 18 holes. Now graced with numerous bunkers, lively greens, and enough water hazards to make carrying a ball retriever worth while, it’s perfect for easy walking, with just one hillside to deal with on holes two through four. The fifth hole returns to the valley floor and the sixth is your first possible encounter with the Sugar River. The back nine threads its way through six ponds/wetlands areas, a brook, and a branch of the Sugar River in an open park-like setting. Tall pines, interspersed with deciduous trees, frame most interior holes and emphasize the need for good drives. The greens are excellent, full of lively movement that requires careful reading. The course fits the land in the fashion of old, and flows naturally along the river valley. “
