My Story: The Name

My great Grandmother Carrie (Denton) Cushenberry "Mama," was born and raised in Baton Rouge, La. the product of a mixed marriage. "Creole". She met, fell in love with, and ran off and married my great grandfather James Cushenberry "Papa" who was also the product of a mixed marriage only opposite. "Geechie". They moved to the Mississippi Delta area where they had five children.
Papa passed away when the oldest child was barely a teenager. Mama moved to Southeast Missouri with her children. Mama lived until she was 114 yrs. old and she never remarried. She said that “when God made Papa He broke the mold and no other man even could come close to the man that Papa was.” As a result of that union the children were Caucasian, African and Cherokee Indian. These are the influences that were passed along through their traditions and cooking techniques.
My Grandmother Rose was a middle child and an excellent cook. I spent as much time with her as I could as a child. When the other children were out playing I would be helping her in the garden. I wasn't any good at it but she would praise me anyway. In return for my collecting eggs from the hen house she would cook me a duck egg in butter with a side of slab bacon. This was my favorite.
There is no greater blessing than that of a grandmother. It is my grandmother Rose who I am most inspired by in life as well as this venture. I enjoyed the items on my menu sitting at her table over the years.
She taught me that with sound Christian Principles , hard work, and integrity nothing is impossible. "If you can imagine it you can do it."
