Holy Redeemer Church began after a couple hundred Catholic families petitioned James Cardinal Gibbons in 1919 for the founding and the building of a Catholic Church, to provide and enhance spiritual services, religious education and evangelization among African-Americans in the early 1900’'s. These families were assigned a Josephite priest – Fr. Francis Tobin – to meet with them and to organize efforts for building a church edifice at 210 New York Ave, NW Washington, DC.

In July 2012, The parishioners of St Aloysius Catholic Church, joined their neighbors and formed one faith-community.

Sunday Masses are at 9:30am and 12:30pm. The 9:30am Mass is led by the Holy Redeemer Gospel Choir under the direction of Denyce Daniels.
