The East Side Union High School District, established in 1950, serves more than 24,000 students in grades 9-12 at 11 comprehensive high schools, 7 alternative education sites, 7 child development centers and 7 independent charter schools. The District offers a robust Career Technical Education Program through its Magnet Programs, CA Partnership Academies, and the Metro ED/CCOC JPA (six district agreement with Central County Occupational Center). The Adult Education Program serves an additional 8,100 students. The District has the seventh largest high school student enrollment in the State and the largest in northern California.

East Side Union High School District employs approximately:

* 572 classified staff members
* 84 adult education teachers

Located in the city of San Jose, Santa Clara County (Silicon Valley), the District encompasses 180 square miles, which geographically parallels approximately 14 miles of the east foothills of the valley. The East Side community has a population of more than 574,500, and it’s rich in racial and cultural diversity.

The student population is multi–cultural and is comprised of:

East Side students speak more than 40 native languages. There are 3,607 students in the District's English Language Learners Program.

There are seven elementary school districts that feed into East Side Union High School District. The District has strong partnerships with these feeder districts, as well as with the community colleges and four-year colleges/universities in the area. Three examples of these partnerships are the Accel and College Connection Academy Programs and the East Side Alliance.

The East Side Alliance is a collaboration of ESUHSD, its seven feeder districts, Evergreen Community College and SJSU. The purpose of the East Side Alliance is to improve student success by building on partner district efforts in fundraising, developing human and technology resources and in implementing key initiatives such as the Common Core Standards and the new Smarter Balanced Assessment Program.
