Cofounder and creative impetus behind two trailblazing magazines, Detour and Flaunt, Jim Turner, has, after nearly two decades spent in front of a computer monitor—spinning the two-dimensional web of fashion and celebrity that is the hallmark of both publications—opened a new store called DLUXX on Highland Avenue. The Hollywood Zeitgeist figures heavily in all of Turner’s projects: Detour and its successor, Flaunt, were predicated on a burgeoning celebrity culture that shows no signs of abating, while DLUXX resembles what one might expect to find if one looted the prop houses of studio-era MGM, Paramount, and Warner Bros. What he doesn’t find, Turner makes, or remakes. Like that company whose slogan is “We don’t make a lot of the products you buy. We make a lot of the products you buy better,” Turner has a certain touch, like Midas, and nothing he puts his hand to is ever quite the same. The oversized wingback chairs powder-coated with automobile paint in an undulating silver-and-gold patina, or the gold-leafed trashcan with butterfly appliques, perfectly exemplify Turner’s quirky and original sense of design, the same off-road sensibility that was the hallmark of fashion-forward designers like Moschino, Leigh Bowery, and Jean Paul Gaultier. The showroom not only offers vintage and custom furniture, but a line of artisenal candles, concrete candle holders, and unique soaps, totes and other curiosities.
In the works is a new line of period-inspired custom reproductions, silkscreened canvas totes and T-shirts, and laser-cut window screens and room dividers.
