Details

The Victoria Tunnel is a Grade II listed structure which runs under the city from the Town Moor down to the Tyne. It was built as a waggonway to transport coal from Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river and operated between 1842 and the mid 1860s.

In 1939, the City Engineers converted the Tunnel into an air raid shelter to protect hundreds of Newcastle citizens during World War II.

Between 2007 and 2009, the Tunnel was carefully repaired and opened for guided tours by Newcastle City Council with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and TyneWear Partnership.

This part of the Tunnel is now open all year round to the public for guided tours operated by The Ouseburn Trust and include fantastic sound and visual effects.

Tours cost £6 per adult £4 for under 16s and last approximately two hours.
We also offer one hour tours during school holidays for families or anyone wanting a shorter tour.
