Originally granted its market charter in 1280, Ulverston was a quiet market town until its expansion following the construction of the canal to the sea, which opened in 1796.
Ulverston Market Charter was granted by King Edward 1 at Carlisle in 1280. It gave Roger of Lancaster the power to raise additional revenues from a Thursday Market and a Fair.
