The Project Space is a platform for the visual and creative arts in Newport, South Wales. Initiating, developing and delivering a programme of performances, exhibitions, workshops and activities in the heart of the city, we will deliver events that are responsive to both the needs and interests of our wider community.

The Project Space is managed by the Empty Shops Project, funded through the Arts Development team at Newport City Council with support from Newport City Council’s Economic Development and Estates teams. Building on the success of previous schemes piloted in the city, Empty Shops Project (2010) and URBAN (2011 -2012), our policy is to facilitate creativity in the community, creating opportunities for people to engage with the arts on Newport’s Commercial Street at the heart of the retail district.

The Project Space is a non-profit, open access resource and development hub in the city. We will be a high street creative portal, both supporting opportunities in our own venue as well as signpost projects happening by other groups, organisations and businesses in other locations across the city, connecting the creative industries in Newport. Our ethos for the space is that it should approachable by all, inclusive of everyone, and enable anyone to achieve with a positive can do attitude.

Bringing creative and visual arts directly to the public, we aim to strengthen the relationship of artists with Newport, as well as aid regeneration of Newport city centre through cultural enterprise in the heart of the city’s retail district. Generating professional and cultural opportunities to work within the city, we will also set up creative exchanges with other organisations across the United Kingdom, attracting creativity and enterprise to our city.
