ABOUT US

The Little Theatre is a predominantly voluntary-run organisation and has established itself as home of the Leicester Drama Society (LDS), having run for 90 years in the heart of Leicester’s city centre.

Proudly boasting patrons such as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Tim Pigott-Smith and Honorary Life President Lord Richard Attenborough (who once trod the boards at The Little Theatre himself!), the society produces twelve main-house shows each year and a consistently popular pantomime, performed in the 350 seat auditorium to an annual average 30,000+ audience members.

We have an outstanding Youth Theatre program who perform a main house production each year and a studio area, the Moyra Haywood Studio, which hosts more niche productions and is an opportunity for budding directors to showcase their talent in our popular ‘One Act Play Festival’.

Any person over the age of 16 is welcome to join the LDS! You will be encouraged and taught to develop skills related to the theatre, whether that be acting, marketing, set building, sound or costume making.

The Little Theatre is proud to survive through the dedication of its volunteers.

‘LETS’

The theatre hosts shows from other societies based in Leicestershire – such as ’The Hired Man’ (Leicester Operatic Players) and ‘Hairspray’ (Knighton Park Amateur Operatic Society’) – along with touring productions from celebrities. Recent guests have included Leslie Garrett, Gervase Phinn and Rob Beckett.

Every year The Little Theatre also welcome a week-long comedy stint, as part of Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival and won ‘Best Venue Over 200 People’ in the 2012 Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival Awards. Other facilities on hand include rehearsal rooms, bar, and costume and furniture storage / hire.

FUNDING

Independent of any council or applied funding, The Little Theatre is entirely self-sufficient, thanks to kind donations, ticket sales, membership subscriptions and the ‘Friends’ of The Little Theatre.
